Free Bus Rides Help Broome County Families Get Back-to-School Shots

Beginning July 1, 2025, Broome County families will have one less thing to worry about when it comes to back-to-school season. Parents or guardians can ride Broome County Transit buses with their children for free to and from any appointments related to school immunizations.

Whether it’s a doctor’s office, a walk-in clinic, or the Broome County Health Department, simply hop on a regular BC Transit route, tell the driver you’re going for vaccines, and ride for free, no bus pass or special paperwork required.

Breaking Down Barriers to Health Care

The Broome County Health Department says that each year, more than 5 million Americans skip or delay routine medical care because they can’t get there. The Broome County Health Department (BCHD) and BC Transit want to make sure that’s never the case for local kids. They’re making sure that lack of transportation doesn’t keep any child from getting essential vaccines that help them stay healthy and ready to learn.

Why These Shots Matter

Diseases like measles, polio, meningitis, and diphtheria can spread fast in a school environment. That’s why state law requires kids in daycare, preschool, and all types of schools, public, private, and religious, to be up to date on their routine vaccines.

Children who aren’t will be excluded from school, including classroom instruction, special services, and even afterschool activities. Broome County officials say protecting the health of students is a top priority and they’re proud of local schools for helping keep these preventable diseases at bay.

BCHD is encouraging parents to book immunization appointments as early as possible. If you’re uninsured or underinsured, ask your child’s doctor about the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program, which offers vaccines at no cost.
