Bit by bit, pieces of the storied IBM Country Club complex east of Endicott are tumbling down.

Gorick Construction workers started actual demolition operations at the site on Watson Boulevard in the town of Union on November 8.

Crews using heavy equipment have been busy over the past couple of weeks tearing down the western portion of the abandoned facility.

Some elements of the former country club that had potential historic significance were salvaged before the demolition project began.

A large crowd showed up at the country club property last week to take advantage of a brick giveaway to obtain a piece of local history.

Thousands of workers from IBM Endicott, Owego and other regional sites used the country club's facilities for several decades. The club also was open to employee families.

It's expected to take several more weeks to clear the site to make way for a 75-unit apartment building.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the housing project is planned for next spring.
