Binghamton officials have ordered the entrances to a downtown restaurant closed until further notice because of concerns about the possibility of falling bricks.

Matthew Jones of Burger Mondays said the dining room and bar won't be operating until further notice.

A small section of a parapet wall along the roof of the building at 23 Henry Street collapsed Thursday morning. Several bricks fell to the sidewalk and onto State Street.

Jones said the restaurant will be open for takeout only during normal hours. He expressed disappointment that customers won't be able to dine in for the time being. He said: "It's horrible." The business pivoted to the takeout model in the early weeks of the Covid-19 pandemic.

A Syracuse-area partnership acquired the five-story building for $2.2 million in August 2021.

The owners had been planning to renovate the property. In a Facebook post, Laney Vassallo, one of the partners in the ownership group, wrote that a mason was quickly contacted after the owners learned of the falling bricks.

Vassallo indicated efforts are underway to address the problem as quickly as possible. She said the company has worked to transform neglected properties "into more beautiful and sustainable homes and apartments."

Tim Moran of the rental company Foundation Housing on Friday afternoon said arrangements are being made with a contractor to get the needed equipment to the site to deal with the brick issue. He said he expects the affected section of State Street could be open in about a week.
