Binghamton Woman Accused of Trying to Rob Downtown Credit Union

A suspect has been arrested after an alleged attempted robbery at a Visions Federal Credit Union office in downtown Binghamton.

Police were called to the Visions branch in the MetroCenter at 49 Court Street around 2:45 p.m. Friday to investigate a report that a woman was trying to rob the bank.

As officers arrived at the credit union entrance on the Washington Street pedestrian mall, they spotted the suspect in the incident and quickly took her into custody.

The woman was somewhat belligerent as police placed her in handcuffs and eventually led her to a van which transported her to the station on Hawley Street.

Investigators and credit union employees were unable to discuss the matter Friday afternoon.

But on Monday afternoon, Detective Captain Cory Minor confirmed that the woman had been arrested after she allegedly passed a note to an employee stating that she had a gun. The woman apparently was unarmed.

Minor said 39-year-old Rian Lawton has been charged with first-degree attempted robbery. Lawton has no permanent address.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

The credit union office was temporarily closed following the robbery attempt.
