Investigators say speed was a factor in the deadly three-vehicle collision on Upper Court Street in Binghamton.

The crash occurred in a construction zone east of Century Drive, a short distance from the Kirkwood town line. The scene was near an entrance to the Greater Binghamton Health Center.

Authorities said the drivers of a sport utility vehicle and a sedan died of injuries sustained in the crash.

According to Binghamton police, 71-year-old Rafael Cuadra of Susquehanna was the operator of the SUV and 49-year-old Safwan Aziz of Binghamton was the operator of the sedan.

Cuadra and Aziz were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The driver of the third vehicle - whose name was withheld by police - was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City for treatment of injuries.

Police officers and firefighters searched railroad tracks and an area off Court Street for anyone who may have been thrown from the vehicles. A drone was used during that search.

Although police said speed had been determined to be a factor in the crash, no additional information was released Tuesday about the cause.

Traffic has been limited to one lane in each direction for months while an old retaining wall is replaced.

New York State Police assisted Binghamton police detectives in the crash investigation.

People with information about the collision may contact the city police detective bureau at (607) 772-7080.
