Protesters Arrested at Congressman Riley's Binghamton Office

Some members of a group of people who spent the day outside Congressman Josh Riley's Binghamton district office were arrested by city police. About a dozen people arrived at the office in the downtown Metrocenter around 10 a.m. Wednesday. Many of them are members of the Ithaca-based Downtown Berrigan Collective. In a news release, the group said it is calling for "action to protect Palestinian lives." The statement said Riley's support "for arming Israel runs afoul of domestic and international law." Leslie Schultz, a member of the group, said they've tried unsuccessfully to set up a meeting with Riley to discuss issues related to the two-year-old war.

Binghamton Firefighters Assist Suspect Down From Roof

City police called the Binghamton Fire Department for help after a man broke into a South Side residence. The burglary at a two-family house at 15 Telegraph Street was reported shortly before 12:30 p.m. on Monday. A man who lives on the first floor told WNBF News he was watching television when he heard a loud noise coming from upstairs. He heard what sounded like a window to a back door being smashed. He called 911 to report a possible burglary in progress. When police arrived, the man suspected of breaking into the residence climbed from a window onto the roof of a front porch. Officers requested assistance from Binghamton firefighters and medics.

New Program Supports Women In Manufacturing Careers In Binghamton

The launch of the first Real Life Rosies cohort in the Greater Binghamton Area was announced on October 21st by the Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce, along with the Manufacturers Association, Alliance for Manufacturing and Technology, and SUNY Broome Community College. According to the announcement, Real Life Rosies inspires and empowers women to pursue rewarding careers in manufacturing or advance in existing manufacturing roles, echoing the spirit of the original “Rosie the Riveter.” This is New York State’s first direct-entry pre-apprenticeship program for women, designed to provide hands-on technical training, professional development, and networking opportunities to help women strengthen and grow their careers in manufacturing.

Binghamton Man Accused of Stabbing Woman Repeatedly

A woman was hospitalized after she was stabbed multiple times on a Binghamton street. Police were sent to the area of Clinton Street and Colfax Avenue in the First Ward around 10:10 a.m. Wednesday after the attack. When officers arrived, they found a 25-year-old woman in the area of 5 Colfax Avenue who had sustained multiple stab wounds to the face. She was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City for treatment. A short time later, police took 38-year-old Michael Davis of Binghamton into custody near the scene. Detectives said he was taken into custody without incident.

Catholic Central Sells Endicott Building to Islamic School

A Broome County Islamic school has acquired the former Seton Catholic High School building in Endicott. The building on Broad Street in the village most recently operated as All Saints Catholic School. It was closed by Catholic Schools of Broome County earlier this year due to declining enrollment. Property records show The Crescent Academy acquired the property and two adjacent parcels on Madison Avenue from Catholic Central High School in August. The purchase price was $1.3 million. Classes at the new location in the village of Endicott began in September. The Crescent Academy is planning for future growth at the Broad Street site. The school is planning to open a daycare program. It is seeking an experienced person to help launch the new program.

New Affordable Apartment Buildings Set to Open in Binghamton

Construction has been completed on a pair of apartment buildings in a Binghamton neighborhood. The $3.3 million project has been developed by Greater Opportunities Incorporated. The new buildings are located on Munsell Street on Binghamton's North Side. One has six one-bedroom apartments and the other has six two-bedroom units. The first residents of the newly constructed buildings are expected to move in next month. Kelly Robertson, Greater Opportunities chief operating officer, said six of the new apartments are reserved for people 62 years of age and older. The remaining six units are designated for people with up to 80 percent of the area's median income.

 

Key Dates For New York High School Football Playoffs

The regular season for New York State High School football is winding down, with sectional, regional, and state playoffs to follow. There are over 70 schools in Section IV from several counties in New York's Central and Southern Tier regions, as well as the Finger Lakes region. According to the Section IV Athletics website, sectional semifinals will be on November 17th and 18th, and sectional finals will be played on November 14th and 15th for all classes - AA, A, B, C & D.

First Look Inside Binghamton "Tiny Homes" for Veterans

Broome County residents have been allowed to see the recently constructed "tiny homes" for local veterans. The ten residential units are part of a $12.2 million project that features a facility that provides a centralized location for veterans' services and support. Offices in the Timothy M. Grippen Veterans Resource Center opened in September. The center is located on Frederick Street on Binghamton's North Side. It's named in honor of Grippen, who served eight years as Broome County executive. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, earning a Bronze Star with Valor and three Purple Hearts. He died in October 2021.
