Binghamton Airport Working to Land New Scheduled Service
Broome County officials are moving to secure another carrier to operate regular scheduled flights out of the Greater Binghamton Airport.
Delta Air Lines advised the county Tuesday afternoon that its daily flights between BGM and Detroit would end after February 14.
Mark Heefner, commissioner of aviation for the airport in the town of Maine, said the county has "already reached out to several different airlines" to set up discussions for new service.
Heefner indicated the Delta decision came as a surprise. He told WNBF News "we didn't expect this." He said "you never want to see a scenario like this come to reality."
The commissioner said the airline cited "operational efficiency, efficiency of the route, load factors and how it was utilized and the revenue that it generated."

Heefner said Delta officials want to rebuild the company's Detroit hub and "they wanted to use the aircraft to increase revenue generation in other markets." He said it was "purely a business decision on behalf of Delta."
The announcement came shortly after a long-planned $52 million airport renovation was completed.
Heefner noted he and other Broome County representatives had met with Delta Airlines officials earlier this year to discuss current and potential service for the BGM Airport.
Although the Delta move poses a major unexpected challenge, Heefner said he believes the situation presents "a tremendous opportunity to improve service overall" for the airport.
In an interview Wednesday, the commissioner expressed optimism for the future, although he conceded the road ahead is "not going to be easy."
