We all know right from wrong. But sometimes that devil on your shoulder may try to nudge you to do something you shouldn't. We've all been there.

One thing that is wrong, is illegal dumping. What exactly is considered illegal dumping in Broome County? Well, according to the Go Broome County website, it is illegal:

To dispose of solid waste along highways, on vacant lots, on business sites, in private dumpsters and other places. Such activities are hereby deemed to pose an imminent hazard to the public health, safety and welfare of the residents of the County.

Anyone who commits this act could be subject to arrest and punishment upon conviction. The reason I bring this up is that I've observed people dumping garbage into dumpsters that belong to our building owners in the past.

And when I had a new roof put on my home, the roofing company parked a large dumpster in my driveway to dispose of the old roofing materials. After being in my driveway for just one night, I noticed garbage had been placed in that dumpster that certainly didn't come from my roof.

Unfortunately, I didn't have a security camera at that time to see who it was. There was a lot of garbage thrown in that dumpster in just one night. The roofers mentioned this type of thing happens from time to time at their work sites.

Also, from time to time overnight before garbage day, I will find someone else's garbage at the curb in front of my home next to my trash and recycle bins. One time, someone walked up my driveway and tossed a very large bag into my carport. Didn't see that person in the act, unfortunately.

If you see illegal dumping happening in Broome County, you can report it. Go Broome County says any information you can provide will be helpful including vehicle and suspect description, license plate, the materials that were dumped, and the location or landmarks.

Broome County has a 24-hour hotline that you can call to report illegal dumping: 607-778-DUMP. Go Broome County points out that illegally dumped materials can be hazardous, so don't touch or investigate the garbage yourself.
