You Can Probably Guess New York’s ‘Best Waterfall,’ Here are 5 Great Ones in the Southern Tier
Who doesn't love admiring a waterfall? Well, I suppose there are some, but I don't know why that would be. Anyway, let's gravitate towards the positive.
I have a small goldfish pond in my backyard, complete with about a 3 to 4-foot waterfall, and even though I've had the pond for several decades, I still love to sit out in my backyard and admire the waterfall, even though it's a tiny one.
There's just something about the look and the sounds of a waterfall that put me into a relaxing state. We are fortunate that New York State and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania are abundant in amazing waterfalls.
New York has perhaps the most amazing waterfall of them all in the continental United States - Niagara Falls. Sure the Canadian side shows off its famous horseshoe falls, but the stateside Niagara Falls is still something to admire.
Aside from Niagara, the Southern Tier of New York has a few waterfall bragging rights as well. Actually, we have a LOT of amazing waterfalls. Here are five that are very popular waterfalls.
Shequaga Falls
Just over an hour to the west of the Binghamton area, you can visit one of the lesser-known waterfalls located off Route 14 in Montour Falls. I used to drive past the beautiful falls every day on my way to and from work in Watkins Glen many years ago. It was especially cool to view in the winter months.
Watkins Glen State Park
Just a bit north of Montour Falls, you will find the Watkins Glen State Park. It's a fun walk through the gorge and a view of the falls as well. According to the park's website, the Gorge Trail was closed during the 2023 season but will reopen toward the end of May 2024. There are 19 waterfalls of different sizes to admire.
The Ithaca area is so rich with falls, below are just three of the many to admire. For a complete list of falls in the Ithaca area, visit the Ithaca Waterfalls website page.

Ithaca Falls
Travel north to Ithaca and enjoy the views of the Ithaca Falls on Fall Creek, located off Lake Street.
Buttermilk Falls State Park
Also in the Ithaca area is one of my favorites, Buttermilk Falls. It looks so much different from other falls with its long gradual slope.
Taughnannock Falls
Head north to view the spectacular Taughannock Falls which is located in the State Park, in Trumansburg. It's a sight to behold.
