Every year, guides chill visitors with tails of spirits said to haunt the halls Empire State government with free tours September 25-November 1.

Popular but creepy lore include the story of the night watchman who died in the Capitol fire in 1911 but still makes his rounds of darkened corridors and chambers and there are the two dearly-departed U.S. Presidents who apparently prefer the digs of the ornate offices in Albany to their postmortem "digs."

For fans of more decorative but still unsettling fare, there are the stone faces, gargoyle carvings and "Lost Murals" (just what did happen to the artist?) to investigate.

Space is limited for the free tours.  Registrations can be made at empirestateplaza.ny.gov/tours/capitol-hauntings-tours.
