Police: Husband and Wife Died As Result of Vestal Parkway Crash
Authorities say a Binghamton man was driving the wrong way on the Vestal Parkway before a head-on collision that killed a Johnson City couple.
Vestal police on Wednesday afternoon released the names of those involved in Monday night's crash on Route 434 between Plaza Drive and Murray Hill Road.
Based on the initial investigation, police said a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of the parkway when it slammed into a 2016 Nissan sedan that was traveling westbound.
Police said 57-year-old Alfred Latessa and 60-year-old Paula Latessa of Johnson City were in the Nissan.
Alfred Latessa was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
Vestal firefighters used a hydraulic tool to extricate Paula Latessa from the wrecked car. She was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Investigators said the Equinox was driven by 31-year-old Stephan Moran of Binghamton. He was transported to Wilson Medical Center with what police described as "non-life-threatening injuries." His condition was not known.
Vestal police said members of the Broome County Sheriff's Office assisted with the crash reconstruction investigation.
No charges have yet been filed in connection with the collision.
Binghamton University Police, Vestal Volunteer Emergency Squad members and the state Department of Transportation provided assistance at the scene.
The parkway was closed for several hours following the crash.
This story was updated to reflect information from Vestal police regarding the correct spelling of the last name of those who died as a result of the collision.
