People use AI chatbots to write emails, plan meals, and get quick answers. But a new national survey suggests many Americans are also using them for personal questions about dating, health, and mental health. The survey did not share New York specific results but it shows how common these tools have become for people across the country.

Most Americans Use Chatbots Often

The survey found that almost 70% of Americans use AI chatbots several times a week. 40% said they use them every day. For some people, AI can feel easier to talk to because it is available any time and does not make them feel judged.

Some People Ask AI for Dating Advice

About one in three Americans said they have used a chatbot for dating or relationship advice. The survey also found that 20% of people would feel comfortable using a chatbot as a romantic partner for support or companionship. Fourteen percent said they have used one for flirting or romantic roleplay. Thankfully, over 90% said they would rather have a real person as a partner than an AI chatbot.

Many People Ask AI Health Questions

More than half of Americans, 55%, said they have already asked a chatbot a medical or health question. Another 24% said they would consider doing so. The survey found that 36% of people would rather discuss physical symptoms with AI than with another person. One in three said they would rather discuss mental health struggles with a chatbot.

AI Can Be a Starting Point, Not a Doctor

AI can help someone find basic information or think of questions to ask before a doctor’s visit. It can also be a private place to begin when someone feels embarrassed. But a chatbot cannot examine a person, order tests, make a full diagnosis, or replace a licensed doctor or therapist.

Nearly half of the people surveyed said they would be comfortable replacing a therapist with AI. Still, anyone struggling with their mental health or worried about a medical problem should reach out to a qualified health care professional.
