An explosion shook a Rochester area neighborhood after a house went up in flames.

It happened at a home on Noel Drive in Gates, just outside of Rochester a little after 6pm on Wednesday, December 9th. "It looked like a big flame ball," Capt. Brian Gebo of the Ridge Road Fire District said during a live media briefing while on scene. "I plan for a long night."

Brian and Donna Corbett caught the massive explosion on their door cam.

Luckily no one was home at the time of the explosion. The blaze did spread to neighboring homes but was quickly controlled.

"It was the biggest, loudest boom that you've ever heard in your life," neighbor Vicki Shrontz told the Democrat and Chronical. "I came outside and the house was just an inferno, terrible, like a gas explosion or something. Its just unbelievable."

Another neighbor described it as a mushroom explosion, sharing pictures of the blaze on Twitter.

A third person said she heard it from a mile away.

120 to 150 firefighters from 40 different fire departments and multiple police departments were on scene to battle the blaze.

The investigation into what caused the explosion is continuing.
