New York Beaches You Probably Didn’t Know About
Traveling is getting expensive, and sometimes the usual beaches are just too packed. Finding those off the radar spots where you can relax without fighting for parking or dealing with noisy crowds. A recent survey asked locals across the U.S. about their favorite hidden beaches, and guess what? New York has some pretty awesome secret spots.
Orient Beach State Park: Long Island’s Laid-Back Getaway
Coming in at #42 on the list, Orient Beach is tucked way out on the North Fork of Long Island. It’s not your typical busy beach scene. Think shells everywhere, peaceful salt marshes, and quiet forest trails where you might spot some cool birds.
It’s a perfect spot to kayak around or just stroll on a 2-mile trail through the woods with water views all around. If you want a calm day away from the noise, this is your place.
Amsterdam Beach Preserve: Montauk’s Chill, Wild Side
Number 47 is Amsterdam Beach Preserve, out on Montauk’s east side. This one’s for the nature lovers who want crashing waves and rocky beaches with almost nobody else around.

You’ll have to walk through some trees and wildflower fields to get there, but it’s totally worth it. No snack stands, no crowds—just you, the ocean, and maybe a hawk or two flying overhead.
Chimney Bluffs: That Crazy Cool Beach on Lake Ontario
At #67, Chimney Bluffs is a bit different with no soft sand here. Instead, you get these wild, spiky clay cliffs rising up right by the water near Sodus Bay. The beach is rocky and narrow, so it’s not the place for swimming, but walking under those giant bluffs feels like stepping into a whole new world.
Why These Beaches Are Perfect for New Yorkers
If you’re tired of crowded parking lots and packed shorelines, these spots give you a chance to breathe, and just kick back in peace. They’re great for a day trip or a weekend escape where you don’t have to worry about elbow to elbow crowds.
