Gyms will remain closed indefinitely in New York State.

"Gyms have been a nationally identified source of infections," Governor Andrew Cuomo said Thursday. "We know from the other states they’ve been highly problematic."

Gyms, movie theaters, bowling alleys and other places people gather in groups have remained closed since the pandemic hit New York in mid-March. All were originally slated to open during Phase 4 but the Governor removed businesses that were considered 'high risk activity,' until further notice.

Gym owners across the state have submitted reopening proposals that are being looked at by officials but there's still no timetable on when they can do so.

Other states have reopened gyms only to later close them down due to the potential spread of COVID-19. Governor Cuomo doesn't want the same thing happening in New York. "We have this storm of spread all around us, and we have to be very careful. Well, let’s open dangerous activities, I don’t think now is the time to do it.”
