Free Event Brings Back Classic Games for Kids in Johnson City
Mark your calendar for this coming Saturday, May 31, because CFJ Park in Johnson City (yes, right behind the carousel) is the place to be! From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., It’s Raining Lemonade will host its third annual Go Fly a Kite event, an afternoon that promises simple, joyful fun the old-fashioned way.
This isn’t just about getting a kite in the air. It's a chance for school-aged children to experience the kinds of games many grown-ups remember playing until the streetlights came on, like hopscotch, jump rope, Double-Dutch, jacks, and of course, kite flying.
Unplugged and Powered by Imagination
The goal? To remind kids (and maybe even their parents) that fun doesn’t require screens, chargers, or a big price tag. The event encourages children to play with each other in the open air, move their bodies, and explore their creativity, all without the need for intense adult supervision.
Who’s Behind This Wholesome Magic?
It’s Raining Lemonade is more than just a sweet name; it’s a grassroots, 501(c)(3) service organization with a big heart and a fun twist. Born out of a simple conversation between a retired nurse, an insurance agent, and a chemistry teacher, this multi-generational dream team took their ideas and turned them into action.
In less than four years, they’ve tackled over a dozen community projects like:
- “Yarn bombing” local fences in Johnson City, Endicott, and Binghamton with handmade winter gear
- Thoughtful gift bags for women served by STAP
- Christmas cheer delivered to Meals on Wheels recipients
- Books and stuffed animals shared through the Jail Ministry
- School essentials given through Teen Angel, including size 16 sneakers and a tool belt for a future carpenter
- Even washers and dryers installed in schools to help unhoused students have clean clothes
Lemon Boppers, Assemble!
You’ll know the volunteers when you see them because they’ll be the ones rocking lemon bopper headbands and big smiles. It’s Raining Lemonade is always looking for more hands and hearts to help, and they’ve teamed up with other community groups to keep their projects thriving.
So, whether you’re a parent, a grandparent, or just someone who believes in the power of play, come out and see what it’s all about. You might just find yourself grabbing a jump rope or tossing a jack or two.

See You at the Park!
The Go Fly a Kite event is free, open to the public, and a great way to connect with neighbors while the kids get some well-deserved outdoor time. Come for the kites, stay for the community.
