The building was completed in 1973 and opened in August of that year.  Currently home for the American Hockey League's Binghamton Devils the venue has hosted hundreds of headline entertainers, NYSPHSAA Basketball Championships, craft and trade shows and much more.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program this week the Manager of the Floyd L. Maine's Veteran's Memorial Arena and Forum, Chris Marion, said Broome County is working with architectural firm Perkins and Will from Colorado to form a plan for the renovation project.  Funding is being provided by New York State and monies available currently are being used to underwrite the planning part of the project.  Additional revenue can become available depending on the scope and magnitude of the plan.

According to Marion enhancements are expected to be made in concessions, food service, merchandising facilities, team support facilities and accessibility.  All renovations will keep the original intent of the Veterans Memorial Arena ...to honor Broome County's Veterans.

The project plan will be presented in phases to allow all current operations to continue without interruption.  In Phase 1 of the project near-term improvements would be made such as enhancements to retain an American Hockey League team and improve ADA accessibility. This is expected to take 12-18 months.  Phase 2 would be a transformative project that could take two to four years to complete.  Phase 3 is a long-term plan which will include utilizing land south of the facility for development.
