Firefighters battled a blaze involving a large recreational vehicle that was being towed on Route 17 just west of Binghamton.

Emergency dispatchers received several calls from drivers reporting the fire around 10:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Motorists said it appeared the operator of the vehicle hauling the "toy hauler" camper eastbound in Johnson City was unaware of the problem.

The Binghamton fire department sent two rigs to the highway to extinguish the blaze once the camper was pulled over to the right shoulder near Exit 71 in the town of Dickinson.

An assistant fire chief said no injuries were reported in the incident. The blaze was extinguished after about 20 minutes.

Cars and trucks continued to pass by while firefighters worked at the scene. Broome County sheriff's deputies and Binghamton police officers were dispatched to the highway for traffic control.

Smoke from the blaze could be seen for several miles. Broome County fire investigators were looking into the cause of the fire.
