Dating can feel awkward and stressful. Now try to plan a date when money is tight and confidence is low. A new study shows that losing a job can make people in New York and across the country pull back from dating, even when they really want to meet someone.

Many People Stop Dating After Losing a Job

According to a study from a matchmaking service called Tawkify, about 1 in 3 people who are out of work say they have stopped dating completely. Another group says they still date, but they choose cheaper or fewer dates because they are worried about money.

It Is Not Just About Money

Money is a big part of it, but feelings play a huge role too. Many people said losing a job made them feel less confident and more worried about how others see them. Nearly 40 percent said they have emotionally shut down since losing their job. For some, it just feels like too much to handle all at once.

Women and Dating Apps After a Layoff

The study also found that women are more likely than men to delete dating apps after losing a job. Many women said they feel pressure to prove they are still hardworking, even when they are between jobs. That pressure can make dating feel like more stress instead of fun.

Men May Face More Breakups After Job Loss

One of the most surprising parts of the study was about men. Men were almost four times more likely than women to say they were broken up with after losing their job. More than two thirds of people in the study said they think men face more judgment when they are unemployed and dating. Amen to that.

Not Everyone Sees Unemployment as a Dealbreaker

Here is the good news. Most people do not see being out of work as a huge red flag. Only about 30 percent said unemployment is a dealbreaker when dating. Many said they are open to dating someone who is between jobs, especially if that person is working on a side job or learning new skills.

What This Could Mean for Singles in New York

In New York, where the cost of living is high and job changes happen often, this study may feel relatable. It shows that a lot of people are going through the same thing, even if it does not always feel that way.
