A town of Fenton justice who was accused of creating a hostile work environment has resigned.

According to the New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct, Ambrose Madden left office on August 16. He had been under investigation by the commission.

Madden had been notified in July that he was being investigated regarding allegations "his improper demeanor toward and treatment of his court clerks" caused three or four of them to quit.

Madden also was accused of presiding over cases involving youth home residents when there was no lawyer present to represent the juveniles.

The commission reported Madden has agreed to never seek or accept a future judicial office.

Commission administrator Robert Tembeckjian said the fact that Madden chose to resign rather than answer the allegations "speaks for itself."

Madden first took office in 2010. His current term was to expire at the end of next year.

Gregory Thomas has been appointed to serve as acting Fenton town justice through December 31.
