Work crews have been busy sprucing things up at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.

Signage reflecting the new name of the 41-year-old venue is expected to be installed this month. The old "Broome County" Arena signs were removed in July.

The facility's name officially changed July 1 under a naming rights deal announced last March. County officials said Maines Paper and Food Service acquired the rights for $75,000 a year.

A $2.5 million renovation project was completed at the Arena last summer. New seating and lighting were installed, along with other interior work. Deteriorating outside stairs also were replaced.

Additional exterior work has been done this summer, including the removal of trees along the curb outside the Arena. Portions of the building have been repainted and new landscaping has been completed.

The old scoreboard that had been in the center of the facility was recently removed. That electronic display now sits outside the building, covered by a blue tarp.

Most of the current round of renovations are expected to be completed by the start of the Binghamton Senators season. The team is to host the Worcester Sharks on Saturday, October 11.
