A man sustained serious burns and smoke inhalation in an early-morning fire in Endicott's Union District.

Authorities say the blaze at 112 Day Place was reported around 1:15 a.m. Friday.

Endicott Fire Chief Joseph Griswold said the 66-year-old man who was the only occupant of the home was out of the structure by the time the first units arrived.

The resident initially was transported to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City. He later was transferred to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse for treatment of burns to his hands and inhalation burns. A hospital spokeswoman Friday afternoon said he was listed in critical condition.

Griswold said the two-alarm fire was brought under control after about fifteen minutes.

Investigators determined the blaze was caused by an overloaded power strip. The fire began under the bed where the man was sleeping. He apparently woke up when he was burned by the fire.

Most of the fire damage was confined to the second-floor bedroom.

Endicott firefighters were assisted by units from West Corners, Endwell, Vestal and Union Center.
