A former car repair shop in downtown Binghamton is being converted into a restaurant.

Binghamton resident Daniel Sharp said the old garage at the corner of Washington and Henry streets is being turned into "an eatery and a beer garden."

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Sharp said the plan is to call the new business "Binghamton Garage." The name is fitting because the property across from the Federal Building most recently was home to Metro Garage.

Sharp said the building has an interesting history, noting it once was part of a cigar-packaging business. The new restaurant will feature indoor and outdoor seating.

Sharp said in keeping with the building's use as a repair shop, glass "garage doors" will be installed. The doors will be opened when weather permits.

The restaurant is expected to have a "soft opening" sometime in the spring, although there's no firm target date.

Sharp said he's been pleased with the support and advice he's received from other local business operators.

The project received a $75,000 loan from the Binghamton Local Development Corporation.
