Authorities say the 17-year-old was arrested Friday, January 28 after school district officials notified State Police about a video posted on social media showing the student firing a rifle at a tree after making what they called “a general threat against Black people.”

Investigators determined the rifle was not SAFE Act compliant and the teen was arrested and later arraigned as an adolescent offender in Chenango County Court.

Officials say, in consultation with the District Attorney’s office, it was determined the incident was not a hate crime since the video was not directly sent to a specific person or group.

Troopers say there was a second person in the video but that person will not face any charges.
