Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office February 18 announced the award of $1.5-million in grants to 16 Farm-to-School projects in the state to increase the use of New York farm products in schools.

The Democrat says the initiative provides students with nutritious meals while helping New York farms.  State-wide, the funding will be used to hire coordinators, train food service staff, provide nutrition education in classrooms and cafeterias, purchase produce, dairy and beef and expand the NY Thursdays Program that uses local, farm-fresh food on Thursdays through the school year.

The Broome-Tioga program will develop a central warehouse in the region to help cut down on a distribution barrier to getting fresh foods to the 31,290 students in the 15 districts.
