New York Governor Kathy Hochul says State Health officials are monitoring not only the Delta variant but also a new variant originating in South America.

The Governor says the vaccine is holding against Delta in spite of news about breakout cases. She told reporters that only about .5% of the vaccinated population are testing positive for COVID and a rare .04% end up in the hospital.  She says, while breakouts are still a rarity, it’s important that even the vaccinated be vigilant about mask wearing, hand-washing and social distancing.

The Democrat also says the State is keeping up with developments regarding booster shots in the future and plans to work with local government and health officials when the time comes to roll out doses.

She says she’s had discussions with Pfizer officials and believes there will be a good supply, avoiding the crush for shots as happened earlier this year in a kind of “Hunger Games” as residents scrambled to try to book vaccination appointments.
