The beach at Greenwood Park in the town of Nanticoke will be closed until further notice.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar's office announced the move Tuesday afternoon.

According to a news release, the E. coli level in a routine water sample taken from Greenwood Lake was too high. The release indicated E. coli naturally occurs in lakes and ponds and "levels normally fluctuate throughout the season."

The parks department moved to shut down the beach as a "protective measure." Another test of the lake water will be conducted. It's not known when the results of that test will be available.

The department said an announcement will be made when the Greenwood Park waterfront reopens.

Beaches at Nathanial Cole Park in the town of Colesville and Dorchester Park in the town of Triangle are still available.
