Broome County is in the market for a new director for the Department of Public Health.

Rebecca Kaufman, who has been at the department for almost five years is departing in a couple weeks to become Public Health Division Director in Wake County, North Carolina and is moving to Raleigh. Deputy Director Mary McFadden is stepping in as acting director.

Kaufman, of course, has guided Broome County’s efforts through the pandemic with a calm demeanor and steady direction.  She also, in spite of being extremely busy with daily dealings made time to talk to local media to provide more details for the public on the health emergency.

McFadden has been with the health department for decades and will lead operations while the search for a director is going on.

County Executive Jason Garnar says that search is currently underway.  He thanked Kaufman for her work in guiding the Health Department, especially over the last year-and-a-half.
