A state of emergency has been declared by Broome County Executive Jason Garnar because of expected dangerous travel conditions as a result of the snowstorm.

The emergency declaration was issued Wednesday afternoon. Garnar said an order banning unnecessary travel would be in effect from 9 p.m. Wednesday through 9 a.m. Thursday.

County emergency services officials are keeping in touch with National Weather Service forecasters to monitor storm-related developments.

The weather service has posted a Winter Storm Warning calling for total snow accumulations ranging from 12 to 20 inches across the Twin Tiers.

The snow is expected to be heavy at times with the possibility of two to three inches an hour.

Winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour will cause blowing snow and could lead to isolated power outages across the region.
