Broome County Budget Proposes New Hires, Tax Cut

Broome County legislators are going over the County Executive’s latest spending plan ahead of budget hearings.

Jason Garnar is proposing a $401-million spending plan for 2020 that includes a 0.51% reduction in property taxes and adds several jobs to cover what the Democrat said was a need in infrastructure and public safety.  That includes the hiring of three deputies for the Sheriff's Office and two new Broome Security positions.

The budget also increases the County’s investment at SUNY Broome Community College with renovations to the old student services and science buildings on campus and funds to help in the expansion of BCC’s nursing program.

Legislators say they will be taking a close look at the new hires Garnar is proposing in the 2020 plan.

A final budget vote is to take place in mid-November.
