Broome County Anticipates Phase Three Reopening in a Few Days

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar says the regional control rooms are getting better communication from New York State regarding the gradual restarting of the economy.

While there continues to be piece-meal loosening of restrictions, leaders and businesses are getting a little better lead on reopening dates and guidelines.

Garnar says, unless there is a drastic change in things like infection rates, Phase Three in the Southern Tier could come June 13.

That would allow for restaurants and bars to resume indoor seating at reduced occupancy and with social distancing and health guidelines involving mask and sanitation procedures.

Some personal services like massage therapy and nail salons may be included in the next upgrade.

Things like theaters, museums and other arts, entertainment and educational venues are not scheduled to reopen until phase four.

New York and local officials continue to keep a close eye on the coronavirus infection numbers as restrictions continue to be lifted but protesters take to the streets in the hundreds, thousands in larger cities, many not wearing masks, yelling and not practicing physical distancing. 

Still New York State’s new daily infection rate of 781 June 6 was the lowest since March 16.  The death rate increased slightly to 45 on Saturday from the numbers reported from overnight Thursday and Friday.

Broome County June 7 reported four additional cases, bringing the total to 597 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 45 deaths.  Chenango County had one new case for a total of 134 and five deaths.  Delaware County holds steady at 77 positive for coronavirus and 5 deaths while Tioga County has maintained 144 total cases and has reported 22 deaths from COVID 19.
