Sentencing has been scheduled in Nicaragua for the man convicted in the strangulation death of Binghamton University student Haley Anderson.

Authorities said 23-year-old Orlando Tercero fled to his native Nicaragua after he killed Anderson in March 2018. The body of the 22-year-old Anderson was discovered in Tercero's apartment on Oak Street in Binghamton after she didn't respond to messages from friends.

Prosecutors in Broome County were unsuccessful in their efforts to have Tercero returned to Binghamton to face trial. He was tried on a charge of femicide in Nicaragua.

A judge found Tercero guilty on November 1. According to Broome County District Attorney Stephen Cornwell's office, sentencing for Tercero is set for Friday. The proceeding in Nicaragua is to start at 10 a.m. Eastern time.

Anderson's relatives will be able to view the sentencing in the DA's office in downtown Binghamton via the same video hookup that was utilized during the trial.
