Officials have finished assessing the damage caused by a two-alarm fire at Binghamton's East Middle School.

Karry Mullins, the city school district assistant superintendent for administration, said the school on East Frederick Street sustained no structural damage as a result of the July 23rd blaze.

Mullins said fire damage was limited to roofing material and debris in connection with work being done on top of the building.

Three classrooms and two bathrooms on the fourth floor sustained "very minor" water damage.

Mullins said an odor of smoke could be detected in a section of the top floor. She said the district was "very lucky" that the damage caused by the blaze was "very limited."

An architect, structural engineer and an assistant fire chief inspected the school building following the fire.

Mullins said seven workers who were on the roof when the fire broke out could not immediately get off the building because the stairwell they had used for access was blocked by the blaze. All of the workers were able to make to the ground without injury.

The roofing project at the school resumed July 24.
