Binghamton Man Admits to Brutal Home Invasion, Assault on Officer, and Witness Tampering
A Binghamton man will serve prison time after admitting to a violent home invasion, assaulting both a civilian and a police officer, and attempting to tamper with a witness while in custody.
Home Invasion in Violation of Protection Order
According to the Broome County District Attorney’s Office, 27-year-old Hamail R. Waddell pled guilty in Broome County Court on August 8, 2025, before Judge Carol A. Cocchiola. Prosecutors said that on May 24, 2025, Waddell, along with another individual, unlawfully entered the home of his ex-girlfriend on Morgan Road in Binghamton. The break in violated a No Contact Order of Protection that had been issued against him.
Violence Inside the Home
Once inside, Waddell assaulted another man, causing physical injuries. When officers attempted to arrest him, Waddell also attacked a Binghamton Police Officer, injuring the officer in the process.

Tampering With a Witness From Behind Bars
The violence did not end at the time of his arrest. While in custody at the Broome County Jail on June 24, 2025, Waddell made a recorded phone call to a protected party. Prosecutors say he urged the person not to cooperate with the case, an act that constituted witness tampering.
Plea Deal and Prison Sentence
Waddell pled guilty to Burglary in the Second Degree, Assault in the Second Degree, and Tampering with a Witness. In exchange for his guilty plea, he will be sentenced to six and a half years in New York State Prison, followed by four years of post-release supervision.
