Most of us yell answers at the television during game shows and pretend we’d crush it if we were ever on. But for one Southern Tier local, that dream actually came true. After years of persistence, Binghamton's own Nicholas Petrilli finally stepped onto one of the most recognizable quiz show stages in the world.

A Childhood Tradition That Sparked a Lifelong Jeopardy Dream

Nicholas grew up watching knowledge based competitions with his grandmother, the kind of childhood tradition that quietly planted a big dream. That early love of trivia later turned into serious dedication. In high school, he joined quiz bowl teams, sharpening his recall and quick thinking skills. And like clockwork, he’s applied to be on his favorite show, 'Jeopardy', almost every single year.

A Decade of Persistence Finally Pays Off

Back in 2014, Nicholas came close, earning an audition, but the call never came. Most people would have thrown in the towel, but not Nicholas. This year, after more than 10 years of trying, the stars finally aligned. He got the official nod and made his debut as a contestant. His words? “Totally surreal.”

How a Casino Surveillance Job May Have Helped Seal the Deal

Nicholas believes his day job played a role in catching the producers’ attention. He works in surveillance at Tioga Downs Casino, which means he’s literally paid to pay attention. Quick thinking, sharp observation, and staying calm under pressure, sounds like perfect game show material.

A Surprisingly Fast Callback That Took Him Off Guard

Typically, hopeful contestants wait months, sometimes almost a full year, after auditioning before hearing anything. Nicholas told WIVT that he was stunned when his invitation arrived just two weeks after his tryout.

How to Watch, With a Special Time Change

Local viewers can catch Nicholas's big moment on Monday, October 20, but need to know that the episode won't air at its regular time. Due to Monday Night Football coverage, his episode will air earlier than usual at 5:30 p.m. on WIVT News 34.
