Schools in Binghamton and other Broome County districts held early dismissal exercises ahead of the holiday weekend.

The drills at city schools and several local districts took place Thursday afternoon. The events were announced in advance. Students were released 15 minutes earlier than usual.

A Binghamton City School District spokeswoman said the drills were noted on the calendar on the district website. She said they the information also was made available via Twitter and through push notifications.

Around 2 p.m., city police cars were positioned at intersections near Binghamton High School. Oak Street between Main Street and Seminary Avenue was closed for the duration of the drill.

Some motorists and school bus drivers appeared to have been surprised by the street closure but no traffic issues were reported.
