I've been a member of the Board 49 Southern Tier Basketball Officials for over 30 years. I've met so many people that I never ever would have known otherwise. I've made lifelong friends both on and off the court because of this wonderful sport. I also have passed along some free advice to basketball fans and coaches.

As you may know, basketball is running into the same problem that almost every other New York High School sport is having. It's the lack of officials to officiate the games. We could attribute this to many things but instead of focusing on the past, let's look ahead.

Recruiting New Officials For The 2026-27 Season

Did you miss our first meeting? No problem, new recruits are still welcome. The next meeting for first-year people is this Sunday, September 27th at Thirsty's Banquet Room, 46 S. Washington Avenue, Binghamton beginning at 5:00 p.m.

Do you have questions? Contact Andrew Good at (607) 242-2341 or Agoodie11@yahoo.com. Be the difference, lead the game, be respected, and make an impact.

There so many positives to being an official. You can make a little money on the side. I know a few guys that use the extra money to pay for their golf membership. The money is nice but the other aspects are so much better.

It's a great way to interact with the young men and women of today, get in shape while getting paid and meeting so many incredible people. We all come from different walks of life and I think it's awesome that we can get together over the game of basketball.

Being an basketball official helps to make the winter go by faster. The season starts mid to late November and goes until early March. Next thing you know, winter is over and spring is right around the corner.

For me, it's a privilege to be able to give something back while getting so much in return. If you have a love for this sport called basketball, then join us and see for yourself. Before you know it, you could be doing this.

.As I get ready to put on the stripes again, I have a question for you: Why don't you join me and be a part of something that is SO MUCH BIGGER than ourselves...Become a basketball official with me.

Once again, the next meeting is this Sunday, September 27th at Thirsty's Banquet Room, 46 S. Washington Avenue, Binghamton beginning at 5:00 p.m. Any questions, reach out to Andrew Good at (607) 242-2341 or Agoodie11@yahoo.com. As the saying goes: "Without the stripes, there are no stars."
