The Nichols Volunteer Fire Department says 8-year-old Amelia Lawrence has been found alive and well. The department shared the update in a public Facebook post, thanking the community, agencies, and everyone who helped during the search.

Amelia had been reported missing after she was last seen walking on Lower Briggs Hollow Road in the Town of Nichols around 5:30 p.m. on October 5. Her disappearance prompted people throughout the community to share the missing-person alert and keep watch for information that could help.

Chemung County First Responders Join Search That Ends With Amelia Found Alive

Chemung County Fire and Emergency Management says it received a request around 10 p.m. Tuesday for UTVs and personnel to help search for Amelia in Nichols. According to Chemung County Fire and Emergency Management, Elmira Heights, Southport, Chemung, and Millport were the first four departments prepared to respond, with other agencies also mobilizing to help a neighboring community.

Chemung County officials said Tioga County notified them around 2:20 a.m. Wednesday that Amelia had been found alive, and the responding units were then canceled.

In its update, the Nichols Volunteer Fire Department said it was grateful to everyone who shared information, kept Amelia in their thoughts, and supported the effort to bring her home.

It is the kind of update that brings a collective exhale after a community spent hours worried about a child. Neighbors, first responders, and people far beyond Nichols helped spread the word and helped search for her, hoping it would lead to this exact outcome.
