The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has hit us with news about adult portable bed rails from Medical King in Brooklyn. These bed rails are causing some serious issues like entrapment and asphyxia hazards, prompting a massive recall of over 200,000 units.
These bed rails are helpful in stopping falls and injuries for people with physical or mental limitations, whether it's at home or assisted living. It also comes with some risks, like entrapment leading to injuries or even death. CPSC stats show that most fatalities related to these bed rails are due to entrapment, especially around the head or neck.
CPSC has put in new mandatory safety standards. These are meant to help all adult portable bed rails meet performance and testing requirements. This will help reduce the risk of entrapment and other dangers. It's also to make sure that these devices are safe for use.
CPSC Chair, Alex Hoehn-Saric is asking caregivers to double-check that the bed rails in use are installed correctly, being used properly, and haven't been part of any previous recalls. National Care at Home Month is all about spreading awareness and keeping our loved ones safe.
