Residents and employees in Broome County have observed ongoing discussions about growth, development, and future plans. These topics were addressed on Wednesday night when County Executive Jason Garnar delivered the 2026 State of the County Address at the Roberson Museum, focusing on progress, partnerships, and upcoming initiatives for the community.

A Concentration On Progress And Continued Progress

The address described ongoing and new projects intended to strengthen economic development, housing, infrastructure, public safety, and quality of life in the county. The address stated that progress should be apparent in daily life, not just in policy discussions.

Partnerships Driving Local Results

A recurring theme in the address was collaboration. County officials, legislators, state leaders, local organizations, and businesses have participated in ongoing projects. Garnar stated that teamwork influences Broome County’s growth and adaptation. According to the address, these efforts are intended to result in new opportunities, updated facilities, and services for families and local employers.

Child Care Expansion Making Headlines

The address mentioned expanded access to child care. A new 200-slot child care center is planned for Oakdale Commons, which is expected to help address the need for reliable and affordable care. The address noted that improved access to child care can impact employee retention, as it may influence whether people can work or pursue new opportunities.

Housing Development Continues To Grow

Housing remains a major focus. Officials reported that more than 1,500 housing units are either completed, under construction, or about to begin construction, including redevelopment of vacant or underused properties across the county. These projects are intended to address housing shortages and revitalize neighborhoods, according to officials.

Public Safety, Veterans, And Community Assistance

The address also emphasized continued investment in public safety, emergency services, and veterans’ programs, areas that directly impact safety and support services in the region. Continued funding and attention to these areas are planned.
