As much as I hate to admit it, I was forced to turn on my heat before Halloween this year.  Heating season is officially here and if that worries you and you need some help, you may qualify for some assistance.  The New York State Home Energy Assistance Program will begin accepting applications on November 17th as New Yorkers can apply for HEAP assistance for their heating bills.

The emergency benefits will begin January 2 for renters or homeowners in danger of running out of heating fuel or having utilities shut off.

Applications are also available on line at mybenefits.ny.gov. If you have questions, you can also call 1-800-342-3009.

HEAP is a federal funded program offering heating assistance of up to $625 this winter.

Eligibility is based on household income and how many people live at the residence.  For example, a household of one must have a Monthly Gross Income under $2,194 up to a household of six having a Gross Monthly Income of under $5,569.
