We have had such a hard, bitterly cold winter that our road crews have had to work over our local roadways almost weekly with salt and plows. This hasn't been kind to the asphalt.

The cold makes the road expand and heave in weak spots, and plowing is of just pushing a heavy piece of sharpened steel into the road and scraping the surface until it's mangled. The huge amounts of salt not only melt the snow and ice, but it also dries the daylights out of the surface of the road. Sapping the moisture from it makes the already damaged asphalt crumble easily under vehicles tires. Here's and example of Old Front Street Near the abandoned Magic City Ice Building, where the pavements weakspot has been damaged to the point that the old brick roadway is showing.

Binghamton's road ways haven't shown brick since the cities main transportation was trolley, and the automobiles had a hand crank in front to get them running.

I took a quick drive down Riverside Drive today as well after reading a friend of mines Facebook post about popping a tire in a pothole. Besides some rough stuff like this:

I found nothing too deep. Why? It's obvious that Binghamton Mayor Rich David has been keeping up with the road issues and has had the Binghamton road crews out to fix the problems upon 1st complaint.

How's your commute?? Would you like to share your pothole pics with us? Instagram your pothole pictures with the hashtag #hawkpothole, make sure you type in the location of the pothole too!

Please exercise caution while stopping to take pictures of roadways in traffic.
