Weed Killer Found in Baby Food and Oatmeal

There has been a grim find by a U.S. Food and Drug Administration chemist.  According to a press release just released. the USDA has found weed killing chemical linked to cancer in a variety of oat products, including plain and flavored oat cereals for babies.

The consumer watchdog group U.S. Right to Know, confirms an FDA chemist testing several types of infant oat cereal found the pesticide known as glyphosate (found in Roundup) in a variety of infant cereals, "including banana strawberry and banana-flavored cereals." Oats are not a GMO crop.

Glyphosate is the most widely used weed killer in the world and experts have concerns that it has contributed to cancer in the world, even though the FDA maintains that the chemical is "not likely to cause cancer."  There is an acceptable amount allowed by the FDA, but far more than is allowed in Europe.

"Glyphosate was also detected in “cinnamon spice” instant oatmeal; “maple brown sugar” instant oatmeal and “peach and cream” instant oatmeal products, as well as others. In the sample results shared, the levels ranged from nothing detected in several different organic oat products to 1.67 parts per million, according to the presentation."

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has only recently started testing our food for these chemicals and it will be interesting as to what future testing will uncover and what our politicians plan to do about it.
