The latest Uniform Crime Report from the FBI shows most numbers for violent crimes in Broome County are down slightly between 2012 and 2013.

Local law enforcement officials say, however, there are categories that are seeing an increase, most of which is attributed to drug use.

Authorities say things like larcenies and property crimes appear to be fueling the drug trade.  The FBI recorded 49 violent crimes in Broome in 2013, 875 property crimes and 669 larcenies for the year.

Long-time investigators have said changes in the crime rates can be cyclical.
