The news is grim.  Bees are disappearing at an alarming rate in the United States and around the world.  With a third of all of our food pollinated by honeybees, scientists are predicting more and more bees to die due to climate change and pesticides called neonicotinoids, or "neonics."

VINES (Volunteers Improving Neighborhood Environments) will offer a workshop hosted by local beekeeper Sue Garing on Saturday, June 13th at 1pm at the Binghamton Urban Farm.

In this workshop, you will learn how to build a bee box-style home.  While people usually think of honeybees when it comes to security of our food supply, there are a large number of solitary bee species that also help to pollinate plants and flowers.

The workshop focuses on creating a home for these solitary bees so people can enjoy the benefits of these insects for years to come.  You'll also learn the types of local bees in the Binghamton area and why it is important to protect them.

What's cool about this session is each person will go home with a bee box to share with others in your household.
