The Tully's restaurant in Vestal was closed for a few hours following a small fire in the kitchen.

Firefighters were called to the business in the University Plaza on the Vestal Parkway around 9:30 Thursday (March 3) morning.

Vestal Fire Department assistant chief John Paffie said the blaze was caused by a broken gas line behind a fryer. He said leaking gas may have ignited as the fryers were being turned on.

Paffie said the gas was isolated and the fire was extinguished. There were no injuries.

Firefighters were on the scene for about an hour.

Paffie said the town code department and the Broome County Health Department were notified of the fire. He said any food which was out at the time was discarded.

The restaurant was closed at lunch time. A spokesman for the business said health department representatives had authorized operations to resume.

This updated story includes corrected information regarding the nature of the fire.
