Update 9/24/13: 28-year-old Terence Meehan of Binghamton has been charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and unregistered motor vehicle.

Investigators say Meehan was driving to work when Captain John Chapman was struck by a pickup truck at North Shore Drive and Washington Street.  Police Chief Joseph Zikiski says Chapman is being treated at Wilson Medical Center and appears to have sustained back injuries but is expected to make a full recovery.

Originally posted 9/23/13 at 9:32am: Our sister station, WNBF, reports that Binghamton Police Captain John Chapman was involved in this morning's hit and run on North Shore Drive in Binghamton. There were three accidents on Riverside Drive this morning. Two of them involved cars and the third involved a car and a pedestrian.

The pedestrian involved was Binghamton Police Captain John Chapman who was believed to have been walking to work around 7:30am when he was struck by a vehicle at Riverside and North Shore Drives, possibly a black Avalanche, which left the scene of the accident.

Reports say Captain Chapman was awake and able to speak to those caring for him on the scene.
