A Van Etten man is to spend four to 12 years in prison in connection with a deadly New Year’s Eve crash in Tompkins County in 2013.

20 year old James Crosby was found guilty in a nonjury trial of two counts manslaughter for the deaths of a passenger in his vehicle, 20 year old Derek Nichols and 67 year old Kathy Lattimore, who was a passenger in the second vehicle. 

The crash happened on Routes 36/96 in Newfield.

The family members of both Spencer residents spoke prior to sentencing and asked for the maximum 15 year sentence.

Crosby was sentenced to up to 12 years for the manslaughter counts, four years for one assault conviction and one year for another assault conviction as well as six months for reckless driving.

The sentences are to be served concurrently.
