Two Johnson City Residents Hurt in Cayuga Lake Accident

A Johnson City man, who is a member of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office K9 unit, is recovering from injuries suffered in a boating accident on Cayuga Lake in Seneca County.

The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office says 45 year old Daniel Balmer was operating the boat when he failed to see a fixed object in the water the night of July 12 in the area of Sheldrake Point in Ovid.

The boat hit a wooden structure and metal light post.

Balmer, who is listed as a Deputy in the Broome K9 unit, was taken to Upstate University Medical Center for treatment of injuries to his face and head.

Passenger, 35 year old Marguerite Malone of Johnson City was also transported to Syracuse with facial injuries.

The Sheriff’s office says the boat was totally destroyed.
