More than half of workers in the United States, left some vacation time unused in 2015.  Not only is that not fair to the worker but according to the Wall Street Journal, this unused vacation time deprived the nation's economy of $223 billion in lost spending.

Think about it, with half of all workers not taking their earned vacation time, that means less spending at restaurants, hotel rooms, airlines or even home improvement projects if you are doing a stay-cation.

According to a study funded by the travel industry, workers used 16.2 vacation days on average last year.  Whereas, the long term average form 1976 to 2000 was 20.3 days.  A lesson to be learned, schedule your vacation, you earned it so please use it.  Even if you decide to stay home and work around the house.  And try to resist checking your email every 10 minutes.  Vacation means to vacate!

Here are the top summer vacation destinations in the Binghamton area:

  1. Adirondack Mountains - features hundreds of lakes to swim and endless mountains all a short distance from the Triple Cities.
  2. Finger Lakes - weather it's a quick weekend away or a stay in a Ithaca or Watkins Glenn B&B taking in a wine tour, the Finger Lakes are always welcoming.
  3. Niagara Falls -  Some like the Canadian side while others prefer not to do the passport thing and stay on the American side.  Either way, this natural wonder is a favorite destination for Southern Tier travelers.
  4. State Parks and Campgrounds -  New York State is full of amazing scenery and there's no better way to experience it than booking a spot in one of our many beautiful state parks and campgrounds.  Chenango Valley State Park is still a favorite of mine and it's so close if you need to get back to your house.
